Burton Cummings’ free concert in Sun Peaks Resort

Burton Cummings rocked Sun Peaks Resort last month at a free concert that was sponsored by Tourism Sun Peaks.

“I’m not usually that sloppy…it’s just that the keys are full of sweat.”

The demographic of concert-goers was diverse, but was predominantly “Baby Boomers” and “Generation Xers”. As a Gen Y baby, I didn’t feel out of place and was familiar with Burton from his days with The Guess Who, belting out the original “American Woman”. This song seemed to unite the generations as it’s been remade so many times that almost everyone is familiar with at least a portion of the lyrics.

I was elated to hear him sing “These Eyes” – an old-time favourite that had me (and most of the audience) swaying and singing.

These eyes are cryin’
These eyes have seen a lot of loves
But their never gonna see another one like I had with you

While Burton clearly still has the talent he had 40 years ago, and a wicked band to back him up, I was most fond of his energy on stage, his witty comments, and his overall performance. He’s not only a musician, but he’s an entertainer, with his crazy facial expressions, and his “rocker” demeanour.

Burton Cummings

“As a songwriter you never know where the songs are going to come from…”

Burton Cummings

“The best thing about this is if you’re not crazy about it, it’s over in 2:57.  Wow, what a deal!”

Burton Cummings

“Just imagine that I’m bathed in black light and it’s dark outside.”  [followed by a slow song]

Burton Cummings

“Every day be thankful for where you live; we are so fortunate. Watch Fox or CNN and it doesn’t take long for you to realize how privileged we are…”
