MEAT and BEER.
On Sunday, June 16th, just two weeks from now, the duo will shine at Vancouver’s inaugural Brewery & The Beast event.
Using the highest quality ingredients, local Chefs will prepare dishes to tantalize your taste buds and get you raring for Summer BBQ season with “experimental meat concoctions”. Whole pig & lamb roasts, house-made sausage, charcuterie, smoked meats, ethnic-inspired dishes, classic BBQ, and more, will be on hand to ensure that everyone is salivating.
While every carnivore can appreciate a good piece of meat, this event is catered to the conscientious eater by showcasing hormone and antibiotic free, ethically raised meat. Meat will be sourced predominantly from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley, with some coming from select farms in Northern Alberta – the land of beef.
These include, but aren’t limited to: Johnston’s Pork, Fraser Valley Duck & Goose, Cache Creek Natural Beef, Sloping Hill Farms and Rossdown Farms and Natural Foods.
The theme is essentially a grandiose “backyard BBQ”, with Chefs coming from a spectrum of establishments. Fine dining restaurants such as EBO and the Fairmont Pacific Rim will be cooking up a storm, at the same time that Gastown’s Peckinpah, and straight up meat shacks, like Smoken Bones, will be dishing up “the beast”.
It’s not a competition by any means but, as everyone knows, there will always be favorites. I’d love to hear yours!

Phillips Brewing from Victoria (where they also host a Brewery & The Beast) will be pouring their delicious beers to be paired with the Chefs’ dishes. I’m hoping for Blue Buck and Longboat Chocolate Porter, but since it’s almost summer they’ll probably offer a hot weather drinker like Analogue 78.
There will also be local cider and wines available, provided by The Vancouver Urban Winery and Left Field Cider Company. Amazing tea from Namasthé, as well as homemade lemonade and water, will be provided for those who leave the libation loving to others, or for those who just need to hydrate intermittently between sessions of dehydration. If you know what I mean…
In addition to being a gastronomically exciting event, guests will have the opportunity to read up on – and talk about – their local farms and specialty food producers. By consuming local goods rather than mass-produced goods, guests will hopefully see merit in keeping our regional food systems thriving, thus create a sustainable economy while reducing our carbon footprint.
