A milieu of tasting and talking turned into one of watching and contemplating at Thursday’s From Farm to Cart event.
Held at the Ridge Theatre, guests mingled amongst each other as they perused the community tables and chatted with local vendors.
Fresh and local food was provided by Urban Digs Farm, Happy Planet Soups and Vancouver food trucks, Re-Up BBQ, Varinicey Pakoras and PazzaRella Pizza. Re-Up BBQ offered bacon apple butter and bacon jam on mini biscuits, Urban Digs Farm shared their jellies on baguette, Happy Planet Soups doled out Minestrone and Pea soup and PazzaRella Pizza handed out Margherita pizza.
While sampling food it’s natural that one would get thirsty. To satiate guests, Terry from Wellbrook Winery poured Rhubarb and BluBerry wine, as well as Bremners Organic Juices. Happy Planet provided lemonades, Tealeaves provided organic teas and Homesteader’s Emporium provided fresh apple juice.
Earnest Ice Cream was also at the event showcasing their salted caramel and cardamom ice cream. If you’re not familiar with the company, you should be. These guys make rich, flavorful ice cream in creative flavors and are passionate about creating quality ice cream. Ben, one of the founders, even has a fridge magnet that states, “Without ice cream, there would be darkness and chaos.”
What was great about this event was the potential connection that could be built between the consumer and the vendor. Like a Farmer’s Market you are put in an environment conducive to conversation where the pace is slow and the people are eager to chat about their product.
Wrapping up the social side of the event, Bonita Jo Magee, Events Manager for FarmFolk CityFolk, and Tricia Sedgwick, Founder and Project Manager of The World In A Garden, thanked the volunteers while giving out some fabulous raffle and door prizes.
But the event was not primarily focused on the community tables and the second part of the night was a viewing of The Apple Pushers. The film is an entertaining and moving account of immigrants trying to build a new life in New York City. In an effort to make money they begin working as “green cart” vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables in the inner cities, commonly known as “food deserts” where healthy food is sparse. This effort is also a step in battling the obsesity epidemic in the state which is something that might be useful in Canada as well as 1 in 4 Canadians are clinically obese. Fortunately B.C. has the lowest rate of obesity in Canada (13%) which in Vancouver can be contributed to many things, including our many walking trails, our bike-friendly roads and our…egos?

The World in a Garden is a multicultural and educational urban farm project that engages community and youth on the nutritional, cultural, social and environmental benefits of a just and local food system. Programs include: youth leadership, kids summer camps, school programs and gardens and farm to table workshops.
